W hat About the Online Travel Segment?
Dining, shopping, museums and tours are the top activities for travelers. Nearly half of U.S. adult travelers (47%) planned activities before they arrived at their destination while on a trip of 100 miles or more, one-way, in the past year. This equates to 74.3 million U.S. adults.

Excursia specializes in providing extensive dining, shopping and attractions information on all of our destinations.
Dining out in restaurants was popular with more than 67 million travelers (48%) in 1998 and was the most popular activity planned before arrival at a destination. Going to a shopping area was the second most popular planned activity (45%), followed by visiting a museum (26%).

Other activities planned before arrival include: sightseeing tour (24%), movie (16%), theme park (15%), religious service (14%), live theater or live performance (14%) and festival or parade (13%). One-quarter of past-year travelers (24%) went to some other type of attraction, which they planned before arrival at their destination.

Many of our destinations have historical significance, such as St. Augustine, FL, America's oldest city, and London, England, an ancient European center.
Cultural and Historic Tourism is one of the more popular sectors of the travel industry. A recent survey by the Travel Industry Association of America found that 53.6 million adults said they visited a museum or historical site in the past year and 33 million U.S. adults attended a cultural event, such as a theater, arts or music festival. Cultural and historic travelers spend more, stay in hotels more often, visit more destinations and are twice as likely to travel for entertainment purposes than other travelers.

Children make great travel companions. Nearly one-half of U.S. adults (46%) said they included a child (or children) on a trip in the past five years. Ninety-two million U.S. adults took a child with them on a trip of 100 miles or more from home. Three-fourths of these travelers (76%) took their own child on the trip. Sixteen percent included grandchildren on a trip; 8 percent took a niece or nephew on the road, and 6 percent took children from another household on their trip.

Excursia's got beaches galore, such as Daytona Beach, FL, Miami Beach, FL, the Florida Keys, Jacksonville, FL, Hilton Head, SC, Tampa Bay, FL, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Brunswick and the Golden Isles, GA.
Beaches are one of the most popular travel activities during the summer. Nearly 50 million travelers say they hit the beaches in June, July and August. More than one-third of travelers (35%, 48.8 million adults) plan to take a trip of 100 miles or more, one-way, to visit a beach in the summer.

Beach appeal is also high for those with children at home and travelers ages 18-34. Nearly one-half of beach-goers (45%, 22.1 million travelers) say they expect to stay overnight in a hotel or motel. Another group, 29%, says it stays with family or friends. Women are more likely than men to stay with family or friends (36% vs. 24%).

Gambling is a common component of many Americans' vacations. In 1996, 79.2 million people included gambling as an activity.
